Dr. Rivera-Acevedo is Chief Science Officer for Ecovita Health Corporation, as well as a cannabinologist, scientific advisor, and director for various biotech companies. He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia. With a BSc from the University of Puerto Rico – Cayey and PhD in Pharmacology from the University of British Columbia, he has extensive knowledge and expertise researching cannabis and its derivatives. In 2015, he established the first laboratory for cannabinoid research in the Department of Pharmacology at UBC, which is dedicated to understanding the therapeutic uses of different cannabis strains and formulations to treat different diseases. At his previous company, Cannevert Therapeutics Ltd, he led the chemistry team conducting R&D, QA/QC, and manufacturing research to improve cannabinoid extract formulations and development of new delivery methods. He has had the opportunity to work with various groups testing established extraction techniques: ethanol, CO2, and hydrocarbon (butane/pentane). He was key in the design and organization of the first clinical trial with cannabis flower in Puerto Rico for pain. Currently, he is helping to develop a revolutionary new cannabis formulation to help patients efficiently and effectively receive their medicine in a state-of-the-art facility.

Dr. David Gordon has more than 20 years of experience working with patients. His expertise is providing non-pharmaceutical options for chronic disease prevention and treatment, with a focus on lifestyle. He currently provides integrative medicine consultations with a focus on implementing effective cannabis therapies to patients wishing to utilize this powerful plant as part of their health and wellness regimen. Dr. Gordon is also the founder and owner of 4 Pillars Health & Wellness, which currently serves as an online educational and resource platform, and for the prior 15 years was a free-standing primary care integrative clinic. In addition to clinical care, Dr. Gordon regularly lectures to patient and practitioner communities on the science of the endocannabinoid system and the use of phytocannabinoids for treatment as well as advising companies within the cannabis industry that focus on education and medical use of cannabis. Dr. Gordon received his Medical Doctorate and completed his residency training at the University of Colorado and remains on the clinical faculty. He is board-certified in Internal and Integrative Medicine and is a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner through the Institute for Functional Medicine. During his time in practice, Dr. Gordon has witnessed the safety and effectiveness that medical cannabis offers to patients and is excited to be on the forefront of cannabis medicine, bringing that knowledge to patients and the mainstream medical commu

A native of Orange County, California, Kevin Koby loves two things: chemistry and cannabis. He’s managed to combine both so far in his life. He graduated from UCSB while working as a chemical synthesis researcher and in technology patenting. After college, he became a part of the team that discovered and scaled up solvent-free cannabinoid distillate. Riding that success, Koby built a large scale manufacturing lab and produced over 20 terpene profiles, several of which won Cannabis Cups. He’s scaled clear production, developed new products, and is currently the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of Abstrax Tech, a terpene formulation and product development leader in the cannabis industry. Concurrently, he is the CSO of Abstrax Labs, a chain of volatile solvent cannabis manufacturing labs. Leveraging both platforms, he is assembling the world’s most elite analytical equipment and developing a team of chemists to research the unknown chemical constituents of cannabis and how they influence our sensorial experiences with cannabis.

About the talk

The labeling of cannabis as medicine immediately necessitates defensible analytical data describing the potency of the plant or product, the safety of the product as contaminant- and toxin-free, and with increasing importance, the terpene profile of the product, and the genetics of the cultivar. It is paramount that manufacturers and consumers can trust the information on a product label, or perhaps more importantly, the data that the grow or manufacturer is privy to, but not the consumer. This panel provides insight into the analytical testing domain, including laboratory oversight, regulatory compliance, analytical technology, and the evolution of laboratory standardization.
