About speaker

Steven Newmaster
Director, Botanical Genomics & Metabolomics at NHP Research Alliance

Dr. Newmaster has been a botany & genomics professor at the University of Guelph, Canada for 18 years and currently the Director of the NHP Research Alliance. He conducts research on plant genomics, medicinal plants and molecular diagnostic identification systems with more than 120 publications and $20 million in R&D funding. Currently he is conducting leading international research on molecular diagnostic tools for NHP authentication, genomic diversity in botanical ingredients used in food, nutritional supplements, medicinal plants and natural health products. His R&D has resulted in the development of policy on biodiversity, and International trade of botanicals including product authentication certification within the food and natural product industry within Canada, USA, Europe and Asia. He advises on the authentication of herbal products to regulators and is developing new QA/QC industry standards for testing natural ingredient authenticity. He is one of the founders for the world’s first ingredient identity certification program (TRU-ID), which has processed over 30 million natural ingredients in the USA, Canada, E.U and Asia. His current research focuses on Cannabis genomics and metabolomics. This research has resulted in development of the Cannabis Barcode Project, which is assembling genetic and chemical barcodes that characterize Cannabis strains, define chemical traits and enable marker assisted breeding programs for consistent product brands.

About the talk

What Is A Cannabis Strain And How Do You Verify Strain Identity And Quality Assurance For Cannabis Ingredients Used In NHPs, Edibles And Beverages

Cannabis strains are not defined scientifically, nor have they been characterized and classified using scientifically validated methods. This presents a challenge for distributors, manufactures and retailers who seek to develop a system for measuring quality assurance and control for consistent brands with Cannabis ingredients. The risk of brand damage is considerable if you do not know how to characterize your ingredient. One solution involves the use of Omic’s based molecular biotechnology that enables a standard operating protocol to verify product identity throughout the supply chain to ensure all stakeholders that products are authentic. Genomic and chemical barcodes provide retailers with criteria to measure reduced health risk while providing a chemical profile that is associated with strain traits. Consumers will be able to access evidenced-based tests that alleviate health safety concerns while providing confidence in the authentic, consistent brands they seek for a healthy lifestyle.

How many people are in here know somebody who has had a positive experience with Cannabis? Sativa? Not just CBD just Cannabis Sativa. And I do this in a number of places when I speak I speak on medicinal plants in various places in the world and it's amazing. How many hands go up this little bit biased in here because you come from the industry, but people have this experience and that experiential evidence is not found and based on what we typically use a scientific method is based on mechanisms in

hypotheses to get tested but it is how we've experienced plant medicine for 5,000 years. So for over 20 years, I should explain on 25 years of being out traveling the world going to different remote communities and asking the people these questions about how do you heal? How do you use plants for nutrition for a healthy lifestyle? What are those planets what do they look like? How do you classify them? And we find out that people have been using plants for a long time for healing and they know this knowledge of plants at a very detailed and that's pretty cool. It's pretty

exciting because I've spent my life looking at plants studying taxonomy and the classic morphologist classic botanist. It crawls around in the names of the wood new species the plants back in June. I was in the Amazon and looking for a particular species in the nearest the KCA, which is a nutmeg family that's very bioactive and we had to go deep into my now down a bunch of tributaries of the Amazon and the type of work that I do crawling around looking at these plants when you meet people that have lived for generations and they understand plants at a very personal level

experiential level. It's quite profound for me and I think we're coming to a time now, especially with social media where this experiential evidence is coming back. People now are sharing their experience with each other which we do and some of you put your hands up you do that. It's like
